Inside the NXT Gen Lab: A Behind the Scenes look at Innovation in Media Production
Imagine 24 emerging talents from across Europe, each fueled by a passion for storytelling, innovation, and positive change. Back in August 2024, they came together for the PANEURAMA NXT GEN Lab – a two-week deep dive into the world of media production, where creativity met technology. From software and skills familiar to animation, VFX, game development, and filmmaking, these young professionals took on the challenge to create, in just a matter of days, five stunning short films that tackle one of the most urgent topics of our time: Environmental sustainability and degrowth.
From Concept to Creation
Split into teams, the participants were tasked with crafting 30-second videos for our partner Friends of the Earth Europe (read more). Working hard, they poured their skills into bringing the theme of degrowth to life, from slowing down consumption to reconnecting with nature. And they didn’t just tell stories – they harnessed technology to amplify their message, using real-time engines, AI, and virtual production to capture visuals that are as impactful as they are beautiful.
Inspiration and Expertise from Industry Giants
One of the secrets to the lab’s success was the incredible lineup of mentors, with experts from giants like DIGIC Pictures, Google, Netflix, The Rookies, Rise FX, Qvisten Animation, and more lending their craft, expertise, insights and guidance. These mentors didn’t just supervise; they inspired, encouraged, and helped participants push creative boundaries. Each day brought new masterclasses, hands-on learning, and valuable feedback sessions, where teams refined their ideas and pushed their projects to the next level.
